Alba Iulia (Hungarian: Gyulafehérvár; Latin: Apulum; German: Karlsburg or Weißenburg; former Turkish: Erdel Belgradı) is a city in Alba County, Transylvania, Romania with a population of 66,747, located on the Mures River. Between 1541 and 1690 it was the capital of the Principality of Transylvania. The city is historically important for both Romanians and Hungarians.
