Gomel (also: Homiel or Homel; Belarusian and Russian: Гомель) is the administrative center of Homiel Voblast and the second-largest city in Belarus. It has a population of 479,935 (2006 estimate). Gomel is situated in the southeastern part of the country, on the right bank of Sozh river, close to the border with Ukraine and to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Although it has been heavily contaminated with radioactive debris following the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, residents were never evacuated from Gomel and the general population continued to grow. The city is serviced by Gomel Airport. The exact date Gomel was founded is unknown. It was first mentioned in chronicles in the first half of the 12th century, and the officially accepted date is 1142. It was owned by the Czartoryski family until the First Partition of Poland. The first Russian owner of Gomel was Field Marshal Pyotr Rumyantsev who built the Gomel Palace. The palace compound later passed into the hands of another Field Marshal, Ivan Paskevich.
