Sanaa (or Sana'a) is the capital of Yemen and the centre of San'a' Governorate. Sanaa is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. At an altitude of 2,300 meters, it is also one of the highest capital cities in the world. Sana'a has a population of 1,747,627 (2004 census), making it Yemen's largest city. Sanaa is one of the ancient Yemeni cities dating back to the Sabaean dynasty of the 6th century BC. The oldest written reference to its existence is found in inscriptions which date back to the 1st century AD.
