Beit Shemesh (also spelled Bet Shemesh or Beth-shemesh) is a city in Israel's Jerusalem District, with a population of 76,100 people. The modern-day city was founded in 1950, although settlement has been on the site since pre-Biblical periods. The ancient city of Beit Shemesh ('house of the sun' or 'temple of the sun' in Hebrew) was originally named after the Canaanite sun-goddess Shemesh, which was worshipped there in antiquity.
