Xian or Xi'an (Wade-Giles: Hsi-An; Postal map spelling: Sian), is the capital of the Shaanxi province in the People's Republic of China and a sub-provincial city. As one of the oldest cities in Chinese history, Xian is one of the 'Four Great Ancient Capitals of China' because it has been the capital (under various names) of some of the most important dynasties in Chinese history, including the Zhou, Qin, Han, the Sui, and Tang dynasties. Because of the city's many historical monuments and a plethora of ancient ruins and tombs in the vicinity, tourism has been an important component of the local economy, and the Xian region is one of China's most popular tourist destinations.
