Changsha (Wade-Giles: Chang-sha) is the capital city of Hunan, a province of south-central China, located on the lower reaches of Xiang River, a branch of the Yangtze River. During the 1st millennium BC, it was the centre of the southern part of the Yangtze River valley state of Chu. In 1935-36 some Chu graves excavated nearby produced important evidences of Chu culture, for instance, the Chu Silk Manuscript. The city's most ancient name was Qingyang.
